STOCK TRANSFER:

Three ways of tax-smart donating to Aspen House:

  1. Give directly to Aspen House and receive a tax deduction for the amount of money donated.
  2. After age 70.5, give directly to Aspen House from your IRA. IRA money is never taxed and the amount donated is maximized. This is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution.
  3. At any age, avoid taxes on selling stocks, bonds, securities, or other property held for more than one year by gifting them directly to Aspen House. This maximizes the donation and saves on taxes by giving the stock directly instead of selling it first and donating the proceeds.*

*IRS annual limits apply on all gifts.

Southwest Enterprise Zone – Contribution Tax Credit Example

The following is one example of what can happen by investing your state income tax liability to local Enterprise Zone projects.  This is based on the assumption that the contributor is a Colorado resident in the 32% Federal marginal income tax bracket:

Assume you owe $17,500 in Colorado State Tax.

Cash Donation

In-Kind Donation

Say your Cash Donation Total is: $5,000
You will receive a 25% state tax EZ credit of: $1,250
Colorado charitable deduction @ 4.55% on $5,000: $227.50
Federal charitable deduction (Schedule A) @ 32% on $5,000: $1,600
After your $5,000 Cash Donation, you have a total tax savings of: $3,077.50
**Say your In-Kind Donation Total is:   $5,000
You will receive a 12.5% state tax EZ credit of: $625
Colorado charitable deduction @ 4.55 % on $5,000: $227.50
Federal charitable deduction (Schedule A) @ 32% on $5,000: $1,600
After your $5,000 donation In-Kind Donation, you have a total tax savings of:   $2,452.50
If you were to give both a $5,000 Cash Donation and a $5,000 In-Kind Donation ($10,000 total donation) your overall tax savings would be: $5,530

Remember – this is just an example of what can happen when you donate to an Enterprise Zone Project.  You should contact your own tax preparer for specific benefits related to your individual contribution(s).  Some Enterprise Zone Projects require a minimum contribution to qualify for the Colorado EZ tax credit.

If your Colorado tax liability is less than your benefit (tax credits), you may carry forward excess credits for up to five tax years.  The maximum credit you can claim in one year is $100,000.  Please refer to the Colorado Department of Revenue FYI Income 23 for more information regarding Enterprise Zone Contribution Tax Credits.

**Gifts of property, equipment, labor, or stocks are eligible for in-kind tax credits of 12.5% of the estimated value.
