The Home

Affordable housing for adults with developmental disabilities

The purpose of Aspen House is to provide local adults with developmental disabilities supportive and affordable housing. The availability of accessible and affordable housing, both here in Pagosa and across the country, leaves far too many people with developmental disabilities homeless, paying too much in rent to afford other basics or living in severely inadequate conditions. More than that, Aspen House strives to cultivate a safe home where adults with disabilities can live to their full potential with loving support, creative life building skills, and innovative programming. Aspen House will allow these adults with developmental disabilities to thrive among their peers.

Our building plans

We are moving forward! We own the property, the signed architectural plans are complete, engineering of the site has been done and the PLPOA has approved plans for building the home. We are now in the process of County Planning and obtaining permits to begin construction.

Aspen House will be an affordable housing 2-story structure with 9 individual apartments. The main floor will have a large kitchen, open area, and a shared laundry facility. There will be 24/7 security/safety staff on site. It will be located at 2079 Vista Boulevard, Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

The Board of Directors will oversee the construction and operations of Aspen House. The staff will manage and maintain the daily operations of the home alongside the residents, as well as provide support for other services.

The purpose of A Safe Place in Pagosa, Inc. (DBA, Aspen House, Aspen Services, PS FroYo and Aspen House Truffle Company) is to provide room and 24/7 support services for adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. A qualified support team will assess each resident and create an Individualized Program Plan (IPP) for each resident based on their specific needs and desires. Round-the-clock care will be provided for the safety of the residents. The program also includes wrap-around resources such as recreation, therapy, community engagement and vocational support services. In addition, all services and programs will be available to non-resident community members that qualify. Once the initial home is built, we plan to assist with future development of homes and housing options to support adults with developmental disabilities in our community.

To apply for residency, adults must be:

  • Eighteen years of age or older
  • Have a diagnosis of intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD)
  • Able to perform daily living skills
  • Free from aggressive behavior
